Nothing like waking up on a Monday to a threesome of good press. 37signals got featured in a video short on Apple.com and won a Chicago Innovation Award presented by the Sun-Times. On top of that, Jason and yours truly were featured in Crain’s Business 40 under 40 treat for the year.

on 23 Oct 06Hey, I mentioned (and linked to) the Apple video on Friday in the comments for the Time post.
And yes, before you ask, I do want a medal ;-)
Chris
on 23 Oct 06That elevator is awesome!
danny Cohen
on 23 Oct 06how can you be so nonchalant about it?!
Mike
on 23 Oct 06With all of the money you’re making, you should buy a desk for DHH to work on.
Shaun Andrews
on 23 Oct 06You guys look so gangsta in the opening of the apple feature.
Tim
on 23 Oct 06Hey what keyboard are you using Jason?
That office looks neat! Looking for a full time designer? ;-)
Reinier (DJUST.nl)
on 23 Oct 06Great vid guys – nice to see you share my taste in archeologists.
Brian
on 23 Oct 06Have you guys every heard about being humble?
We all wish you well that you are getting such great press, but frankly the constant self promotion is nauseating.
Michele
on 23 Oct 06Yeah, the keyboard’s awesome, I was going to ask the same… :)
Luke Redpath
on 23 Oct 06Brian – if you can’t promote yourself on your own blog, where can you promote yourself?
Fernando Reig Matthies
on 23 Oct 06What about the MacBook sleeve/case… Could you tell me what brand and model it is your showing in the video?
Henrik Lied
on 23 Oct 06Oh my god, I love your office!
JF
on 23 Oct 061. We share the office with Coudal. It’s their office, we sublet some space.
2. This is the keyboard.
3. This is the laptop sleeve.

on 23 Oct 06Glad to see you are a SEN SEN fan!
Joe
on 23 Oct 06It seems like every other post you guys are tooting your own horn. Where do you guys draw the line between showing your users what you have been doing, to seeming conceited?
JF
on 23 Oct 06Well Joe, when it rains it pours. Right now we’re getting some great press coverage. We’re excited about it and we’re sharing it. If you don’t like it, skip over it. It takes even less effort to skip it than to read it and complain about it.

on 23 Oct 06Welcome to the elite group of Chicago Web developers who’ve been named to the 40 Under 40. :)
Congrats!

on 23 Oct 06Congrats guys. I love the Apple video….it has actually inspired me to consider switching back to the Mac for my work and running Boot Camp or Parallels for the occasions when I have to run programs that are available only on Windows.
Jeff Mackey
on 23 Oct 06Congrats on the awesome press, and for all the awesome apps you guys make. I’ve said it before: 37signals rocks.
Tamim
on 23 Oct 06Hey Jason. I understand your complain about Joe. But i think it is snobbish if you answer that way. That is what people outside your circle will feel. Not responding will add more value.

on 24 Oct 06Great job guys. Saw the Apple vid on Friday. Loved it.
And Brian and Joe, from above, please. This isn’t “humility” class. It’s business. People who self-promote get noticed. People who don’t, don’t. Like Walt Whitman said, “If you done it, it ain’t bragging.”
keep up the good work 37 Signals.
Kevin Guilfoile
on 24 Oct 06Congratulations Jason. That’s all incredible news. And congratulations as well to My Old Desk, which has a featured role in the Apple vid and more than holds its own, I think.
Coudal hasn’t sat anyone there since I left. I prefer to think of it like a retired number at the ballpark and not some problem that’s bacteria-related.
Brian
on 24 Oct 06Thanks Ben. I know it isn’t humility class. People who self-promote get noticed, I agree. Its fine to do that every once in a while.
But from my perspective, it’s a bit much. So, yes you are correct, 37 signals self-promoting will get noticed; but too much of it, will also get noticed, and frankly it will get old.
I’ll compare it to your favorite artist or band. If you listen too much to the same music over and over, and the artist is on every radio station and tv promoting themselves, the act gets tired. That is why, most artists/promoters carefully manage the acts to producing and promoting every 1.5 – 2 years; basically so people never get tired of the music, the artist and the message.
So my only point was, give us a break, we know you are excited, and your products are pretty cool, but stop just a little, please, of the self promotion.
Christian
on 24 Oct 06Jason: Do you really use your macbook pro for your sole work station Or was that just for the photo shoot? I’m on the verge of an upgrade and am tempted to do just that—I would love having all my files in one place for studio/work/home (backup backup backup of course). Congrats on the fanfare btw.

on 24 Oct 06Brian, 37signals isn’t self promoting, they are pointing out articles in the media that other people have written. Apple made the video. The Sun Times wrote the story. Crain’s awarded them with the 40 under 40.
Signal vs. Noise is 37signal’s news blog, idea blog, product blog, marketing blog, discovery blog. It’s all of these things. That’s the way it’s always been.
There is more to point to because there is more going on in the 37signals sphere these days. The number of excellent design and business posts on this blog is also way up which is a great thing too!
I’ve watched the RSS feed jump from 5000 to over 30,000 today. And it keeps going up despite some people who keep telling 37signals to change and say different things. They’ve been telling 37signals this for years and somehow, I know it’s amazing to some people, they keep growing their customer base and their readership.
So maybe you should look at yourself a little instead of arguing with something that is clearly working here.
JF
on 24 Oct 06Christian, yup. Everyone at 37signals works on a MacBook Pro exclusively. We may have another machine around for testing, or whatever, but the MacBook Pro is what we’re all working on all day long. There’s nothing quite like having a laptop as your only machine. It’s fantastic.
stephen
on 24 Oct 06just curious – how do you navigate to this profile on the apple.com site ie, where is it hidden?
Stephen Sclafani
on 24 Oct 06Stephen,
Education tab > Higher Education icon > “Why Mac for Science and Computer Science” box on the right > “Learn why software developers depend on Macs.” link.

on 24 Oct 06And yet, Brian, you are still here. If you want a break, stop visiting their website. Its the ultimate way to “do less”, it could be your ultimate tribute to the 37S mantra. ;-)
Nice job guys…I kept wanting DHH to go WHOOPS! in the video! Even the articles, mags, and videos 37S finds themselves a part of have class, style and kwon.
stephen
on 24 Oct 06Thanks Stephen. Hmmm, didn’t think it would be under Higher Ed. Go figure!
Terri in Tokyo
on 24 Oct 06congratulations! you guys deserve it. I just want to thank you, as well. We are a pro podcast shop here in Japan, and revel in using basecamp and the mac together (bilingually, yet!). helped us solve problems, and will continue to do so…some proof: our ESL mini-drama just hit #2 of the iTunes Japan Top 100 Podcast chart. I guess we must be using something right:-)
Proudly made with basecamp & Mac.
Michael
on 24 Oct 06Congratulations! Great video!
Here’s a story for you. Let’s take one of those wild Eastern Europe countries i.e., Poland. People earn there $800/month in average. The funny thing is that all Apple products are about 50% more expensive than in US. Crazy huh ? Oh, well. I’m in Poland and gonna get one anyway, mainly because of that superb 37signals’ video ad on apple.com (oh well, there are some other reasons as well). Hopefully it will be here on my desk in 2 weeks. The sad thing is I can’t get IcePro keyboard anywhere in Europe. I found some in UK but they told me they won’t ship to my country (Ouch!). But I’ll keep on haunting. Here is one question for you guys. Is Mac Mini together with 24-in. Dell 2407wfp a good choice ?

on 24 Oct 06Talking of the MacBook Pro, Apple have just announced ones with the Core 2 Duo processor. Up to 39% faster apparently.

on 24 Oct 06So fascinating to see how few entrepreneurs are on the Crain’s 40 Under list this year. You don’t have much company. The times are changing surely. Keep up the good work.

on 24 Oct 06what kind of speakers are those? little black cubes.

on 24 Oct 06Tamin, Joe, Brian, and the rest of the people bitching, or even worse, saying “ya, we get it, but you should try saying it this way, or doing this or that differently.” I am sure the 37s guys really appreciate the advice on how they should present themselves, because it obviously isn’t working how they do it now. ;)
When we all are so much more successful with our own approaches, and the 37s crew just can’t figure out why they are struggling, then I’m sure the advice would be helpful, ‘till then it just comes off silly at best. If you don’t like it, maybe you are not the intended audience. I’m sure they will send out an apology for forcing you to come hear and read stuff you don’t like, if you notify them that you didn’t appreciate the engraved invitation.
I just LOVES me some entitlement folks.
Thomas Aylott
on 24 Oct 06I think the question that everyone is wondering is…
What TextMate Theme are you guys using there?
Doesn’t look like one of mine :(
Mike
on 25 Oct 06Thanks for not showing us your toilet in the apple ad. Some guys would ask what kind of paper do you use. ;)
