Mark’s new license plate! Who knew you could get an @ sign on a license plate?
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !
Mark’s new license plate! Who knew you could get an @ sign on a license plate?
Tanner Christensen
on 11 Aug 08Unbeliav@ble.
What model of car is that, it looks slick (especially with the red type of the plate).
MI
on 11 Aug 08Thanks, Tanner. It’s a Chrysler Pacifica.
James Deer
on 11 Aug 08Hahaha! That is sooooo cool!! :D:D
Justin Reese
on 11 Aug 08That is unbelievably nerdy, and undeniably cool.
Andrew
on 11 Aug 08Does a Chrysler Pacifica embody the 37 Signals/Getting Real philosophies? I’d be interested to know what the rest of the 37 Signals team drives and how their wheels relate to the 37 Signals manifesto. It’d be a real measuring stick as to how far each member of the team applies those principles in all aspects of their lives.
If public transporatation wasn’t an option, my personal vehicle of choice would be a Sparrow, now known as a ‘NMG’ http://www.myersmotors.com/ But, if money was no object, I’d spring for the Tesla http://www.teslamotors.com/
Tim
on 11 Aug 08I believe Jason on more than one occasion has mentioned that he drives an Audi A4.
DHH
on 11 Aug 08Andrew, we don’t have any mandates on the cars people drive. Or their belt buckles. Or tooth pastes. Or anything else for that matter.
We also don’t intend Getting Real to be an encompassing philosophy to guide all aspects of your life. I think we have enough religions vying for that job.
Ar'ash
on 11 Aug 08That would be even more hilarious in Australia :-)
MikeInAZ
on 11 Aug 08@Andrew & @DHH,
WHAT? I’ve integrated the 37Signals WAY OF LIFE into every facet of my life. From choosing girlfriends to choosing what to eat, I ask myself, what would 37signals do?
WW37D, that is on my car and on my girlfriend’s back (tramp stamp, tastefully done, of course).
:)

on 11 Aug 08Punctuation on plates varies from state to state. I lived in North Carolina for two years and they counted most anything, although towards uniqueness it did not count. So “FOO” would be the same as “FOO.”
Definitely saw “JOHN 3:16”
Bjoern Paschen
on 11 Aug 08You geeks! :)
MI
on 11 Aug 08Andrew, the point of the post isn’t to discuss my car choices, though I’m happy to hear other options. If you can show me a cost effective option that is better than what I have now and that can carry me, my wife, and my four children, I’m all ears. I’ve yet to discover anything that makes sense—the hybrid SUVs seem like a gimmick from where I’m sitting.
I choose not to live within an urban area with a public transportation infrastructure, but I balance that by telecommuting and driving as little as I can get away with.
Aaron
on 11 Aug 08I guess nobody noticed Andrew was just trolling like a seasoned pro. Well played, sir!
Rabbit
on 11 Aug 08California allows for heart characters.
Nevada does the standard A-Z and 0-9. Our custom plates have gone down the shitter the past few years. The letters on custom plates look like stickers, whereas standard plates are still raised metal.
Tommy M
on 11 Aug 08Unbelievably nerdy. I wish DMV’s allowed for longer license plates so we could possibly add an email to the back of one of these, or even a ”.” (period) would be a nice addition as well.
Don Schenck
on 11 Aug 08I know for a fact that Jason does not drive an A4.
Jeff
on 11 Aug 08was WTF-37S already taken?
Mark Holton
on 11 Aug 08Very cool.
Unfortunately jealous cynics like “Andrew” make comments, ...but fortunately they get thrashed by logic, optimism, and great attitudes. It’s especially enjoyable when they get thrashed by people many times more effective and successful than their cynical attitudes would ever lead them to be.
...thank you and keep on moving forward, 37Signals, with Getting Real, your apps, and attitudes—you guys are an inspiration in this field that I, for one, greatly appreciate.

Thank you Mark! We really appreciate that.

on 11 Aug 08Come now, bashing someone for their choice of motor vehicle, practicality be damned?
What is the “37 Signals Way”, anyway? I understood Getting Real to be applicable to doing business.
Personally, I drive a 450rwhp twin-turbo Nissan 350Z, but you’d be hard pressed to find me produce much waste if any, it’s the one luxury I allow myself.
There is still a concept of “fun” and “enjoyment”, and even with the current prices of gas, the cost/benefit analysis still lies on the side of benefit for me, personally.
Lay off the personal judgements please.
Juiced Pixels
on 11 Aug 08Slightly pretentious.
MI
on 11 Aug 08Only slightly? I’ll try harder.
Justin
on 12 Aug 08I live in Australia, and I find this absolutely hilarious.
I think there could be a hint of ulterior motive when you chose this numberplate? ;o)
Cheryl Gledhill
on 12 Aug 08I guess you guys aren’t familiar with the aussie slang for the word root.
Root (verb and noun): synonym for f*ck in nearly all its senses: “I feel rooted”; “this washing machine is rooted”; “(s)he’s a good root”. A very useful word in fairly polite company.
Noel Jackson
on 12 Aug 08@DHH 37signals isn’t a religion? I’ve been on the wrong site for quite a while! ;)
Charles
on 12 Aug 08I never knew you could have punctuation. I might get my e-mail address if I can then, [email protected] would fit! My girlfriend is an actor and has ACTOR as her plate. Very cool.
alexander
on 12 Aug 08You can get all kinds of things on your plate in California…hand print silhouette, lightning bolt, heart…
Jemaleddin
on 13 Aug 08A Chrysler? Once again we see evidence that 37Signals doesn’t care about uptime or reliability. :-)
Seriously though: the 37S crew has mentioned cars a few times on this blog and I can’t remember them ever heaping praise on a car that wasn’t a stinker in terms of reliability. Audis mostly. But that may be my faulty memory.
Tomas Sancio
on 13 Aug 08It won’t be long until spammers install cameras on streets to fish email addresses from license plates. A bummer.
Ron Oldham
on 14 Aug 08Wow, It looks like someone touched a nerve on the Chrysler thing. I must admit, that was my first reaction as well. Seems kind of ironic.
I too would be curious what kind of ‘vehicle’ would pass the 37s test: A bicycle? A streetbike?
Despite what DHH says, 37signals DOES mandate that all employees use Macs. –And that’s a GOOD thing.
I had no idea any state offered symbols and punctuation for license plates.
I don’t understand ‘ROOT’ –Inside joke? Geek speak?
Matt, props for supporting yourself and 5 additional humans. You’re obviously a very responsible individual.
I personally think license plates are the bane of beautiful vehicles. Some vehicle designers embrace plates by turning the entire back-end of their vehicles into a frame for the the hideous plate, while other (smart) designers do their best to hide it by relegating it to the bumper or below it.
Seth
on 14 Aug 08You bozos discussing their choice in cars, religion, and applying ‘getting real’ to everyday life really need to find a hobby.
That being said, incredibly geeky plate. Seems out of place in NC, but I’ve seen quite a few variations on that theme out here in the Bay Area.
PS: “root” is the default superuser account on a UNIX system…
Francis
on 14 Aug 08Haha – very cool: I wish we could you the @ sign in the UK!
Amanda
on 15 Aug 08Wow! I’m in NC and I’ve never seen @ on a license plate before. I switched cars about a year ago and I still have no idea what my current plate says, unlike my first car whose plate I’ll probably remember for the next decade.
