One of my favorite things about designing software is that you can fuck something up real bad, but you’re always just a couple undos, redos, or tweaks away from a better solution. It’s amazing what a few steps forward or backwards can get you. Things can snap into place or out of place so quickly.

on 07 Jul 11Great comment! I think this statement really represents the confidence to put something out there and adjust vs. designing/living in a vacuum.

on 08 Jul 11Even better if the software you are building allows the user to mess up, then undo, redo, etc, all that good stuff. Microsoft Office, and especially browsers (back button), have trained users to expect this everywhere.

on 08 Jul 11what you say about design is true for every form of art … undos are more difficult with sculpture though …. ;D

on 08 Jul 11instead of “better solution” i would have said “something that works”. just because a few undos ago you had something that worked, it doesn’t mean that it was the better solution. i read your blog everyday and i love your insights but yesterday (by coincidence) i wrote about this subject on my own blog:

on 08 Jul 11LOL, I’m not sure about that one, when the panic sets I just want it fixed!

on 08 Jul 11TIL a lot of people have never worked on software that’s deployed across a few thousand desktops, where the minutest change to the UI, even if it’s totally obvious a massive improvement, is guaranteed to piss a bunch of people off.

on 08 Jul 11Wow.
Using the F-Bomb in an otherwise useful statement.
How very …. hipster … of you.
(Shuffling of papers)
What was that you wrote about creating and maintaining an audience? This is poor, untidy writing, bound to unnecessarily offend someone (yeah, like me), and looks posed. It’s not at all the adult straight talk I enjoyed in your book and in your blog, at least up until now.

on 08 Jul 11See ya, @Richard!
I LIVE by this concept, Jason. I throw away a shitload of stuff before I find The Right Answer.
Amen and thanks.

on 08 Jul 11wait, can someone tell me how you can even define the act of swearing in a statement as being “hipster”?
