on 07 Sep 12Audi always has great styling. But, I am not a fan of them putting their emblem on the gril in the front of the car.
Joel Sutherland
on 07 Sep 12It’s not that distinctive. It is very reminiscent of the Hoffmeister Kink that BMW features on all of its cars:

Jacob Patton
on 07 Sep 12@Joel, but it’s a double Hoffmeister Kink, an evolution of that design element we now see on all the luxury cards these days. The symmetry is beautiful, even if I’m not really a big fan of the kink in general.

on 07 Sep 12seems like someone really likes Audi, not the first Audi post – wonder how you feel about Volkswagon – some similar models

on 07 Sep 12Echoing Joel (and not to take anything away from the OP) - several Porsche models have -very similar kinks and detailing.

on 07 Sep 12Mate.
Is this an insightful post on truly great design, or self justification on an indulgent purchase?
Not to say you don’t deserve it, but the design content is really very far below the calibre of your usual posts.

on 07 Sep 12Mez: It’s none of the above. I just like the design detail so I shared it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mez
on 07 Sep 12I stand corrected on my insinuations then!
But I still think there are better automotive designs. Particularly from Audi. Used to love their very distinctive A2’s, and love the R5.
I will, as ever, look forward to reading more of your insights. Have a good w/e.

on 08 Sep 12To self indulge on my (pre ordered) purchase, i really like the design detail on the back door of thr BMW 650i Gran Coupe. It gives the impression that the window is longer than it actually is.
Back on topic, the detaling on the Audi is nice. Love German cars…

on 08 Sep 12That’s a nice touch, but still doesn’t match all the triangle accents on the RX-8 that echoed its engine’s triangular rotor.

on 08 Sep 12No shit!
Tell me again why it’s important.

on 10 Sep 12I agree. I used to have an Audi, and was surprised by how the engineers and designers had thought of EVERYTHING. It had incredible attention to detail. Still to this day, I think about the little things that I liked about it but would never have thought to ask for in a car (like the ability to close all the windows and the sunroof by putting the key in the door and holding the key in the lock position). I think it’s just good design that any industry can learn from.
Nic
on 10 Sep 12@Ron Pretty much any Audi or VW can do that. Or press and hold the lock button on the remote key. Works both ways as well – to open or close.

on 10 Sep 12The car’s purpose is to get you from A to B. Therefore good design in relation to cars should be centred on reliability and efficiency.
I see nothing good about this design.
Disappointing post.

on 10 Sep 12Jason, I agree with you…from a design perspective, that little detail on the Audi A7 is nice.

on 10 Sep 12Old stuff.
The Alfa Romeo 156 (a car that was in production from year 1997) was the first to have it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo_156
By the way, the now head of VW Group design, was the designer of that Alfa Romeo (and the 147 model that had the same door handle). That can explain something :)

on 10 Sep 12THIS makes me realize how serious are the issues of ‘blog commenters’. It’s a worldwide phenomena – even here.
James
on 10 Sep 12I like it. But I like most anything that Audi is doing these days. The A7 is a strong enough car visually and mechanically to stand next to anything from BMW, Mercedes, or Jaguar.
Jason’s post reminds me of the focus on the details that the design and engineering teams at Audi are obsessed with. Cool.

on 10 Sep 12Wow these comments are some of the worst I’ve seen on SvN.
He just says he likes the way something looks on a car and this happens:
1. People think he bought the car 2. People think he bought the car and is bragging about it 3. Audi’s logo on the grille sucks 4. Something you like isn’t as good as something else. 5. Someone else also does the same something else as above, so the guy who did something else better than the OP’s guy isn’t all that special. 6. X car is better than an Audi 7. Having something nicely designed on a car is stupid 8. You don’t need to buy an Audi because other cars have similar features as Audi

on 11 Sep 12From a design perspective it really is a good example of simplicity at work.

on 12 Sep 12Just as an FYI – on the A6 the windows slope down and so does the trim and the handle. Yes – good design.
