When we needed a creative shop to help us with this year’s holiday gift, we turned to Scott Thomas and his crew at Simple.Honest.Work in Chicago. They did a fantastic job putting together the concept and building, printing, and assembling the final packages.
Shaun shot a behind-the-scenes film of the final stage of the project. Here’s how they put it all together:
We’re looking forward to getting some postcards.
A safe holiday season to everyone. Take care.

on 22 Dec 11Beautifully shot and a great thoughtful gift, everyone should be thrilled.

on 22 Dec 11Perhaps the most amazing video I’ve seen all season. Thanks for being so creative and awesome!! Love, love, love.

on 22 Dec 11Nicely done (and filmed)!
Manuel F. Lara
on 22 Dec 11Beautiful indeed, nice work. By the way, what did the envelopes contain?
Elomar Souza
on 22 Dec 11Manuel, here are the “inside the envelope” pics – http://www.flickr.com/photos/will_j/sets/72157628510781599/ :)

on 22 Dec 11That chick is hot. And she isn’t married. Digits please.
JS
on 22 Dec 11@Andrew I think her number is 719-266-2837
Ryan Clark
on 22 Dec 11Haha, I see what you did there, JS.
What a beautiful video… So inspiring.
BM
on 22 Dec 11Wait a sec. You’re giving a vacation as a gift?
David Andersen
on 23 Dec 111. Loved seeing that happen, thanks for the video. 2. Nice attention to detail Simple.Honest.Work. 3. Cool idea. 4. Thank you, my Hall & Oates crisis is O-ver.
David Andersen
on 23 Dec 115. What’s that great song? SoundHound is bamboozled.
David Andersen
on 23 Dec 11@Andrew, what you meant to say is that she’s beautiful and possess the calm grace of willow in a storm.
Dan J
on 23 Dec 11Ummm…just need to regress a few years and second the hotness of the woman in the viddy.
Then I need to ask what the hell the cool gift is all about. Something tells me I would have known 20 years ago. I lost my literary reference DNA somewhere around the 2nd of 3 kids.

on 23 Dec 11I read at a first grade level, you need to slow down the last 2 or 3 slides of doodles explaining the thing : )
Devan
on 23 Dec 11It is wonderful to watch old fashioned craftsmanship in action… Thanks for posting!
Carl Hancock
on 23 Dec 11Were these given to select customers? If so, I must say not only is the execution beautiful but giving them a vacation?! Nice job 37Signals. Well done.
Nate
on 23 Dec 11Beautiful all around. The doodles would have looked great like this ;) http://youtu.be/Ka8Y7MN9M6Y

The song is Morning by Nicole Reynolds… Searched it by lyrics, was curious myself.

on 23 Dec 11I’m watching this and thinking: Fucking rich white people, the time they’ll waste.
WonderingWandering
on 23 Dec 11Anonymous Coward, I lean toward your side. While the music on the video is charming, and craft, in our world, is commendable, this strikes me as just another form of excess—greed with a false overlay of whimsy. How much did it cost to make those books and to send all those customers on a trip? A great PR stunt to be sure, but surely also the gift and gifting of the one percent.
Anon
on 23 Dec 11She is hot! #justsaying
BS
on 23 Dec 11@WonderingWandering I don’t think it was any customers who received the trip. I think the trip was for the 37s employees as a thank you/christmas bonus. To me, it is a GREAT idea to surprise the people who work for you with something unique and far more thought out than simply writing a check.

on 23 Dec 11What is the gift a fake book?

on 23 Dec 11Slow down that animation – had to watch the video three times to actually take a look at the illustrations and READ the text.

on 23 Dec 11I seriously want to thank you guys for setting a new standard on how to build and run a company. A lot of what you espouse are all things that I’ve believed for years.
Hope you guys, and your readers, have a wonderful and safe holiday season.
Cheers…
WonderingWandering
on 24 Dec 11@Cleavon, thanks for that thought. It does cast a totally different light on it.
hi
on 24 Dec 11Hi Jason
Jeff Koke
on 24 Dec 11Dear Wondering, I have no doubt that Jason and David have joined the 1% I also believe they earned every penny of it and applaud them for their ingenuity, ambition and entrepreneurship.
These gifts, although we don’t know whom they were for, were likely not given to others as blessed as they are. The company that made them employs creative, dedicated people who are probably grateful for the patronage of 37Signals.
There is a class crisis going on, and we should not lose sight of it, but Jason and David and the rest of 37Signals are on the right side of that struggle, and this video is proof of that.

on 24 Dec 11Really good work. Thanks.

on 24 Dec 11Lovely. Shot with love.
Did anyone bring up/consider the implications of adapting the trademark/logo/etc?
Happy holidays all.

on 25 Dec 11I really enjoyed having a hand in producing this thoughtful gift. It’s refreshing to see a company that cares even about the smallest details of their employees’ gifts. Happy holidays!
DHH
on 25 Dec 11To clear up the confusion, this is our xmas gift to all the employees of 37signals. A vacation to one of the destinations on the map arranged and paid for by the company.
J. Simmons
on 27 Dec 11This is one of those cases where I think the process and the package are cooler than the actual gift. Not that it’s a bad gift at all.
Rachel
on 27 Dec 11What a gift and what a presentation! 37signals should be an example for all companies… beautiful!
IT Rush
on 28 Dec 11Hmm, looks like I’m already late for the party eh.. anywayz, what a very nice idea you have in there.. Keep it up!

on 29 Dec 11Any company who can waste money on this ridiculous gift is making to moo much money and should be giving way more back to its customers. sickening.
