By popular demand we just launched a new Campfire feature. Anyone with Admin access can now kick a guest out of a room.
Hovering over a guest’s name in the “Who’s here” sidebar will reveal a red “Kick” link. Clicking that will boot the guest out of the room. It’s not a “ban” — they can enter the room again — but at least you have some control over rowdy guests.
We hope you find it useful.

Good stuff.

on 18 Apr 07Awesome! Now the last thing the annoying people in my Campfires will see is “Hope you like Italy… ‘Cause you’re gettin’ the boot!”

on 18 Apr 07What about a “bouncer” link to stop them entering in the first place.

on 18 Apr 07So now when someone is deliberately disruptive, they’re told that they’ve succeeded and there’s nothing stopping them from continuing?

on 18 Apr 07Does Campfire prevent two people from using the same screen name?

That’s up to you. If you want to tell them to stop, tell them to stop. If you want to kick them out, kick them out. If they come back and aren’t causing problems then you have nothing to worry about. If they come back and continue to cause problems kick them out again. They’ll move on eventually.

on 18 Apr 07This enough control for my needs. Thanks!

on 18 Apr 07It would be funny to have different escillation levels.
Kick – Just removes them with access to the room again. Knock Out – Keeps them out for the day. Break Arm – Keeps out for a week
You get the picture. :)

on 18 Apr 07You might also think about doing something similar to what Joel Spolsky does on his forums. When they block someone, they still let them post. But, that person is the only one who sees their posts, nobody else does.
So, when you kick someone from the room, you could make it so that they can keep posting, only they are the only ones who see their comments. Nobody else does. They eventually get annoyed by the fact that no one is responding, and leave on their own.

on 19 Apr 07“kick a guest”
If you are kicking them out, wouldn’t they be better labeled as a “jerk” or even a “effin jerk”
Nice attempt at being polite, but “Kick the Jerk” has a better ring to it.
JF
on 19 Apr 07AndrewH: You may not always kick someone because they are being a jerk. We don’t want to make rude assumptions about someone’s behavior when there may be other reasons for the kick.

on 19 Apr 07My point was that “They’ll move on eventually” turns it into a contest over who has more free time and attention. IRC proved decades ago there’s always a 13-year old who wants to tell you about his penis who has way more free time than you.

on 19 Apr 07Peter, there’s always something we can dream up that can be a problem. However, we haven’t heard from anyone yet that it’s a major problem for them while using Campfire.
We’ve just heard from some folks that they’d like a simple way to kick a guest out of the room. That’s what we delivered.

on 19 Apr 07Wouldn’t it be better if you could set a time limit as well?
so instead of just “kick” you could have “kick” and “kick for 5 minutes”. I don’t think anyone is going to wait 5 minutes just to come back and annoy you. But (as mentioned above) they may just keep coming back because they know they can.

on 19 Apr 07Lame! This means I can’t cause hilarity in Blue Flavors chat sessions anymore!
JF
on 19 Apr 07Chris: There are a lot of things we could do. We chose to do the simplest one that will provide 95% of the value. Because we kept it simple it took just a few hours to build it and launch it. And now we can move on to more important things. It’s all about prioritizing time vs. value.

on 20 Apr 07That’s the one tiny little feature that I missed. Perfect. I actually didn’t need it to kick trolls, but to prevent inactive users for blocking the way for other users.
Well done.

on 23 Apr 07Haha… it will add a little more fun to the chat. :P Kicking it… Lol..
