Some of the folks at our Chicago office drink a lot of coffee and have been known to have strong opinions on the quality. So I decided to see if they actually preferred the taste of really good coffee over a cup of something a bit more generic.
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 23 Mar 15Nice!
Now if you could perform the same experiment with six professional baristas and see if they provide equally inconsistent answers, that would be even more interesting.
Brandon
on 23 Mar 15Lol! You should do this with French press coffee. I find that it brings out the flavor a lot more than other methods.

on 23 Mar 15Loved this. You all handled this very professionally. I think this deserves publication in a journal somewhere.
For the sake of science, I would be willing to volunteer for a donut tasting experiment. Or Cadbury cream eggs. Though I guess there’s only one Cadbury cream egg variety. Still, I’d volunteer. Let me know.

on 24 Mar 15Brew it properly, and anyone who cares about coffee will taste the difference. This is like having a non-wine drinker compare Franzia to an Amarone.
Aaron
on 24 Mar 15Good times. I have found that the method of brewing affects the taste much more than the beans. Crappy beans through a french press = good. Great beans through a drip coffee maker = bad.

on 24 Mar 15Haha! Loved it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

on 24 Mar 15There goes my faith in humanity again. If people cant discern between flavors but still can have an “opinion”, good luck with settling on more important issues.
Or I should drop my idealistic hat and put on my opportunistic hat. Sell bullshit at a premium price.

on 25 Mar 15hahaha I love this cause it’s so Basecamp – plain honesty, “no bullshit” kinda thing.
Milan
on 25 Mar 15So someone at Basecamp don’t know how to properly brew a coffee and made eight victims to prove it to him. :-) Fortunately, you folks are great at something else which is why we love your products. Nice video though.
Raphael
on 25 Mar 15very good video! Coffee: always a nice topic!

on 26 Mar 15Love this video.
I personally think the majority of people who drink coffee prefer bold dark roasts… and most “high end” coffees I’ve found are the exact opposite – medium, sour.

on 28 Mar 15From the looks of this comment section, it seems like no one knows what pour over brewing is.
