Am I really the first one after three posts to take a substantial guess at what Basecamp NextNext (BCXX?) will be like? The comments section sure has changed.

Things that will stay about the same:

1. Speed in the browser/app – this will be hard to improve upon.

2. Email notifications – probably not much beyond formatting changes.

3. Pricing/trial – I can see Slack and Trello getting Basecamp to consider the benefits of a free version, but I don’t think it’s going to happen here. The prices are fair and probably working well.

Things I think will change:

1. Massively improved onboarding inspired by Slack, data science and the experiences of the impressively proactive customer support group. “How am I going to get my team to use this” is going to not be as much of a problem.

2. Support for multiple departments/project categories/org switching. I suspect BC will try to expand support for the bottom half of the Fortune 5,000,000 beyond as they tried to do with Breeze and Basecamp personal.

3. Projects will become faster to create and understand, somehow. Wild guess: you can sketch in the app and turn it into a new project with one tap. :P More likely, components of a project will be cards of some sort. Maybe the project itself will be a card that can be grouped with other projects instead of just appearing like one in the list of projects.

4. More realtime features – unsure what exactly, but I wouldn’t be surprised if orgs could at least see what clients are looking at or have looked at.

5. Maybe there will be more support for third-party integrations. This would have been unthinkable a few years ago, but it’s easier to do now and 37signals has more dev resources. If this happens, I think that those integrations will be cards just like messages, files, task lists, events, etc.

Boring…

@Michael – there’s a chance you may see some of the following in the new Basecamp… “Campfires”, “Assignments”, “Pings”. There may be an “Inbox”. Whether these things are in the final product remains to be seen. But, I’m excited to see what BC has cooked up.

I’m excited too. The last Basecamp changed expectations for performance of SaaS products. Like I said, I think performance is hard to improve on, but I’m interested to see what new expectations might be set.
