was just over at Photojojo and noticed their cool solution for the forums and how to visually convey which threads are getting the most responses.

I found this amusing OS selection menu on an HP product registration page. One Mac OS and sixteen Windows OSs.

I was shopping online the other day at Safeway.com and never finished my order. They just emailed a reminder to me letting me know that my cart still has some items remaining in it and that it has been set aside.

on 26 Jun 07besides the fact that “the total value of your cart is $14.8” the Safeway thing is pretty neat.

on 26 Jun 07Hey – the Safeway email truncates the total value to ”$14.8.”
It’s accurate, but looks strange.

on 26 Jun 07I love the first two. Great finds.

on 26 Jun 07I love the Photojojo forum response indicators. Great idea, I think.

on 26 Jun 07The Photojojo forum reponse indicator is really great idea, but I wonder how much space it will require. How does that impact all the other visual elements on the screen?
David
on 26 Jun 07I like the Photojojo response indicator as a concept, but I don’t think it works well when you look at it on a full page. I want to easily scan and read, including the number of replies. Having them shift around like that doesn’t make it easier, even if it looks pretty.

on 26 Jun 07Given the missing digit error in the price (14.8), I wouldn’t be surprised if some condition caused the price to show up as NaN. I’ve seen that happen before.

on 26 Jun 07Usually in a forum I’m more interested in recent activity than overall activity…

on 26 Jun 07Wowza. Never imagined something I designed would end up here! (Especially since we’re still tweaking and improving the interface)
@carlivar—That’s a good point! What metric do you think is worth paying attention to? Most responses in the last 12/24 hours?
@David—We actually considered removing the numbers altogether! I think it’s similar to analog vs. digital speedometers, where the physical movement of the needle gives you a quick visual read on the information you need to know most, whereas the digital readout requires a little more thought to read. (Is it really important to know that I’m going 1.3 miles per hour slower than before, or do I only care about larger changes most of the time?)

on 26 Jun 07I hope they didn’t set the cart aside with milk in it.

on 27 Jun 07@Amit – good question on the timeframe. If you have a stat on when the person last visited the site, you could go by that (perhaps with a maximum), and then set a default when such info doesn’t exist… probably 24 hours.

on 27 Jun 07An even more interesting thing is that each of the 16 Windows Operating System has more market share than Mac OS X ;-)

on 27 Jun 07Upon first glance at the Photojojo screenie, I thought the background color of the numbers was indicating how fresh the topic was. In a way, I think that would be more useful than the color being determined by the number of replies, since there’s already a very clear indicator of that (the length of the bar). You could use a brighter green to indicate recent activity, and a duller green to indicate a “stale” topic.
If you don’t like the variable bar sizes, you could also change the size of the circle to indicate the number of replies, or “size”.
