Jamis, our resident whittler, had some fun with a piece of pine from a branch he found while visiting some relatives in Eugene Oregon.
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 17 Mar 08Weird. I’m so used to always reading “37signals” that I forgot for a moment that you indeed have a logo.

on 17 Mar 08Odd, I never noticed it before but the logo resembles a happy face, only missing part of the mouth.

on 17 Mar 08It took me a second to rotate in my mind. At first I couldn’t even see it. Weird.
Also Oregon is beautiful this time of year.
Tim
on 17 Mar 08By the way, what does your logo represent? (it might be obvious to certain people but I never figured it out)
Thomas Ryan
on 18 Mar 08I allways thought it looked like the Sony walkman logo.

on 18 Mar 08Spiffy! I wish I had that talent – I’m terrible with anything that isn’t on a piece of paper or on a computer screen.
@Tim: I’ve heard that the name and logo are a reference to stellar constellations and something about intelligent life…but I could be wrong.

on 18 Mar 08The 12-year old in me SOOooo wants to make a joke about wood.
Whittling as a hobby? Very Amish, you betcha.
My personal paperweight is made out of #18 rebar … no surprise.

on 18 Mar 08I hope the pain you inflicted on that tree was worth it. Yes, I am kidding. Did he stain or burn the wood to make it black?

on 18 Mar 08What’s the logo mean?
Evan
on 18 Mar 08Aw, I thought my 37signals emoticon that I posted was adding value. Sorry to contribute noise rather than signal.

on 18 Mar 08Your logo is similar to Sony Ericsson’s Walkman http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&q=sony+ericsson+walkman+logo&btnG=Search+Images

on 18 Mar 08Actually, if anything, Sony’s logo is similar to 37signals’ logo. 37signals logo has been around since 1999. Sony’s logo is newer than that.
Evan...again
on 18 Mar 08@Joga Luce:
I think it’s hard to peg at first because it’s carved into something round, thus resembling a face, and proportioned about the same as the standard smiley face.
Also, in this photo it’s turned so that the “eyes” are on top if you’re sitting at the desk (which you pick up on by the grain of the wood in the desk, and the orientation of the keyboard too.)
Human brains are wired to recognize faces at a very visceral level.

on 18 Mar 08I think the name 37Signals is in reference to the SETI@Home project or something.
I’m not clever enough to figure out the logo… probably related to the same thing.
One thing about the picture, the keyboard in the top right corner through off my frame of reference. I kept seeing a stupid smilie face, and not the logo… not very relevant, but I thought it was interesting.
