Twitter vs. Yammer: Should web apps go for popularity or income?
The economic crisis might leave growth-oriented companies like Twitter with little choice but to start focusing on the bottom line. “Now it doesn’t matter if you want to scale first because you just can’t have it,” said Paul Kedrosky, a senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation. “You have the luxury of being able to decide between small and focused on revenues or large when you have capital. When there isn’t money, there’s no choice.”

on 23 Oct 08This is an interesting article. The value in Twitter’s approach is obvious. Build the community first, monetize later.
It’s amusing to think that a company like Yammer could copy Twitter and be able to win. I say this now, but seriously – look at Facebook.

on 23 Oct 08I like how everyone (not just you N!ck) says they “copy Twitter” – they weren’t the first to do this – but that gets forgotten when they became the most popular.
Good luck to them – the business model is the most important thing.
