You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 03 Nov 09I’ve been following Jason and 37signals since late 2005, so I knew roughly what this piece was going to say, but it still had some interesting insights. Keep up the good work…your company is one to be envied. Plus, it’s no surprise why you’re such a fan of Ricardo Semler too.

on 03 Nov 09Is that the same Carols Segura as segura-inc.com? I assume so since he is in Chicago too. I had no idea that you started 37s with him, really? Does he have a role/stake in the company now? Seems like a strange fit as he has his own design shop (what 37s was when it started).
JF
on 03 Nov 09Louis: Yup, same Carlos. He left 37signals about a year after we started the company, but we remain best of friends.
He had a handful of other businesses at the same time and just couldn’t dedicate his time to 37signals like Ernest and I could at the start.

on 03 Nov 09Just read the article, and I think you should consider packaging and selling your admin screen you use to monitor the goings on of all your apps in real time… I think a lot of web based small businesses could utilize it, instead of just staring blankly at their Google Analytics page.

on 03 Nov 09Jason: Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite Tea-related website? Where online do you buy your teas from? I’ve recently started getting into tea, and I want to learn more. My favorites at the moment are Rooibos that I fell in love with in South Africa and a Chai that I bought in Vermont.

on 03 Nov 09JF, what books are in your reading pile? Just curious.
JF
on 03 Nov 09Alex: Lately I’ve been getting most of my teas from Harney & Sons.

on 03 Nov 09A very nice read. Evidently we own the same credenza. But mine is the wenge. Great place to hide stuff from my 3-year-old!

on 03 Nov 09As the president of a web development firm myself, it definitly helps to see how other people spend their day. Sometimes you feel guilty when you want to focus on things that better yourself instead of the company, however as the president you have to realize bettering yourself is bettering the company.
Great read, and I love hearing about how 37 signals works because they are a great inspirations.

on 03 Nov 09Just got my copy in the mail. Drums was my first instrument. I wish I still had a set. I definitely need a way to get my hands dirty after being in front of a computer all day. To help with that I’m building my own screen printing press out back. I need to do more with my hands and get away from this desk once in a while.

on 03 Nov 09Thnx. Coole article. I like your attitude.
Ric
on 03 Nov 09Looking forward to reading Rework.
Are you planning multiple formats like you did with Getting Real, or is this coming out in a print version only now that there’s a publisher involved?
JF
on 03 Nov 09Ric: At this point we know there will be a hardcover, Kindle edition, and audio book. Don’t know what else, but I would imagine maybe a paperback down the road as well.
Wells
on 03 Nov 09ha! He had me until “I relate to Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Now I’m afraid.
Quinn Weaver
on 03 Nov 09I’m curious, did the author paraphrase you at all, or cut and paste your quotations? I don’t really know how publications like Inc. work. The article had the feeling of something you’d say, but it seemed condensed.
JF
on 03 Nov 09Quinn: We did a 4+ hour interview which was recorded. The article is in my words, but edited down and trimmed.

on 04 Nov 09Thanks for sharing this…I really like the emphasis on getting the work done. That really is the bottom line.
Treating your employees as adults and letting them work where they feel most productive and when they feel most productive, while allowing for what other employers would consider “goofing off,” is the right way to go.

on 04 Nov 09Thanks for the inspiration. Found 37signals a month or so ago and have been reading “Getting Real” online. Definitely a nice perk/treat. And also started my Ta-da list. Take care.

on 05 Nov 09An entertaining read! The key thing for 37signals is that initial transition from web dev shop to software maker. That’s what allowed all those later benefits to happen, such as loose work hours and being able to work from home. Props for making it happen.

on 06 Nov 09I may not agree with everything 37Signals say, but Jason’s a total dude. Sounds like a really nice, balanced lifestyle, and one that I hope to emulate one day in my own way.
Death to the 40 hour work week!
