on 29 Jan 07I like the front page of http://bubbl.us—a big “start” button that doesn’t require you to register so that the login elements seem muted by comparison.
In fact, the front page doesn’t have a registration link at all—you can’t register until you get sucked in, at least a little.

on 29 Jan 07I’m paranoid about getting Spam on my phone. I would never give out my number to a company like Citysearch. So far the only company I’ve trusted with my mobile is Google, when I signed up for Gmail. I guess that says a lot about their brand

on 29 Jan 07To add to Kyle’s remark, I’m pretty happy with the way Thinkature handles first-time visitors. The first page you see already has the real deal right there in front of you. You can try it out without clicking start, signing up, or anything. It’s wonderful for showing someone quickly what the functionality is. Another site that does this well is Geni.
However, both sites could benefit from putting the login fields right on the homepage too, in my opinion.

on 29 Jan 07Is on-the-fly’s categorization done by humans or by algorithm, I wonder?

on 29 Jan 07@Kyle, Thats odd. I think the front page of Bubblus is woeful. Really really bad stuff. I actually wrote about it here… http://www.destraynor.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/124-You-only-get-three-seconds-to-make-an-impression.html
I love those PDF receipts that look like receipts. Excellent stuff.

on 29 Jan 07I think they mixed “Hipster” and “Player”.

on 30 Jan 07I did the “text myself” thing with Yelp this weekend. I spent the day in Seattle, and wanted to make sure I had the addresses/phone #’s of several Indian restaurants. Works great, sure beats having scraps of paper or even a notebook.

on 31 Jan 07http://6brand.com/msadcenter_termsandconditions.jpg Just ran across this while signing up for MSN Adcenter (they give you $100 free for signing up). Two comical problems: My 1280 screen isn’t wide enough to display their form without scrolling and that ‘terms and conditions’ box is absolutely miniscule.

on 31 Jan 07Des, I responded on your blog. Basically, I think the “start” button eliminates a lot of those concerns, not to mention the fact that while “brainstorming” may be a bit vague, “mind mapping” would be obscure, and I think going with a term that people at least think they understand is a better way to go.

on 05 Feb 07We did this sort of thing a while ago on tickle.co.nz I uploaded an image to flickr to show.

I hate forms and going back to a form because an input was wrong so why not show the form output in a logical manner…..like on a real envelope….and the reciept on a reciept.
