You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 19 Jan 11Surprised that they didn’t pay the $1 to use the istockphotos without the watermark. I do the same thing for mock-ups, but would never go public like that.

on 19 Jan 11AC, that was intentional. We did pay for the usage but felt the generic-ness of the watermarked photos matched the message so left ‘em in.

on 19 Jan 11Is the date generated dynamically? :-)

on 19 Jan 11That’s great. The ironic part is the productivity gained by boycotting a meeting is lost by visiting a fun site like that. or even SvN…. or taking the time to comment on SvN….hmm
After the Meeting
on 19 Jan 11The REAL problem is that most meetings are not productive. How do we change this? First, we need to identify those meetings that are a complete waste of your time and why. Is it the facilitator? Do the meetings lack purpose? Are you achieving individual and meeting goals? Are people following through on their commitments? Are things falling through the cracks? The number one reason in our estimation is that people do not do what they promise in meetings. Follow through is abysmal. We have created a solution to resolve this problem. If you are tired chasing people down to do their work, after the meeting may be valuable to you.

on 19 Jan 11Love it! This is the type of quirky fun marketing that 37 Signals is known for. I’m not sure I have seen much of it lately but glad to see it now.

on 19 Jan 11Ah, yes – the good old “meetings aren’t real work” meme.
With experience, however, you realize that participating in effective meetings is some of the most important work you can do.
If meetings at your company aren’t “real work” then a) you’re doing it wrong, or b) you’re working at the wrong place.

on 19 Jan 11How realistic is not to have meetings? We need productive meetings instead of no meetings.

on 20 Jan 11Meetings…they produce “minutes,” but waste hours.

on 20 Jan 11Meetings…worthless if they are “needed”, necessary if they are “wanted”.
