What are people reading on SvN lately?
Size of bubbles corresponds to share of total SvN web readership, January 2014 through June 2015.
You’re reading Signal v. Noise, a publication about the web by Basecamp since 1999. Happy !

on 22 Jul 15Love this, thanks for sharing… i wonder what a similar visualization would look like for activity on those same posts after you posted this :)

on 22 Jul 15It’s a pretty and interesting image but I can’t help thinking that this doesn’t provide as much informational value as a simple bar chart or ranked list with some key metrics. Is there some key utility of the mass bubble chart that I’m missing?

on 22 Jul 15Interested to hear HOW you obtained the ‘read’ statistics. I usually never directly click on an article link here, but rather go to the SvN top level URL and scroll down the page, reading articles. The only time I will click on an article is to read the comments (rare). Do you count a ‘read’ by clicks, or by time spent on an article while scrolling? IMO that could skew the count quite a bit.

on 22 Jul 15@Devan – good question. These are just reads on article permanent pages (like where you went to comment); it doesn’t include home page reads or RSS. That means that the absolute number of article reads isn’t right, but the relative number of reads for different posts would still be pretty close to what reality actually is. That’s what the visualization is showing—relative traffic to different posts, not a specific absolute traffic level.
