Carlos Segura, the man behind T.26 and 5inch, and one of the original partners at 37signals, has quietly been sharing his car obsession with the public. Car lovers everywhere should be thankful.
Cartype is a growing collection of everything car. There are plenty of car sites on the net. Plenty of sites that cover one brand or provide lots of stats like Edmunds. But Cartype takes a different approach.
Besides the standard car photos and info, Cartype spews car logos, company logos, dealer tags, concepts, people parking like idiots, interesting signs, and more.
If you are looking for the standard car site content, the car section has subsections packed with info and photos for current cars, topless cars, supercars, hybrid cars, wagons, classics, comebacks, ugly, cars not coming to the US (interesting), and more.
Yes, the type on the site is a little small, and some things are tough to read, and it may not be comprehensive in the way Edmunds or Yahoo Autos is, but it’s a lovely and unique obsession. If you love cars, do check out Cartype.

on 28 Nov 06Unrelated, but did you hear about that Toyota hybrid engineer that died in a plane crash over the weekend?

on 28 Nov 06When and why did Carlos Segura leave 37signals?

on 28 Nov 06Interesting—I didn’t know he was a partner.

on 28 Nov 06I am outraged that my personal car, the Dong Feng D120, is listed under ugly.

on 28 Nov 06I’m sadden to see that Saab is not listed at all :(
I love my 9-3 Aero.

on 28 Nov 06Carlos was a partner for the first year and then left to concentrate on his other businesses. He had too much on his plate to focus on 37signals. It was an amicable split. We remain best friends.

on 28 Nov 06Jason rocks. We are indeed best of friends. :-)
Tim
on 28 Nov 06Ah ahaha. Carlos and Jason are BFF
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

on 28 Nov 06I think he should add MP3s of car horns. Seriously! This is an underappreciated aspect of car design and yet for every car that’s ever been made someone has had the job of creating a voice for it. Think about the nasal beep of the original Volkswagen Beetle. It fit perfectly with the car’s appearance. The little Renault 4 that was my first car also had a perfectly matched horn, a high-strung tenor bleat that fit perfectly with the car’s small size and insolent personality.
You could do quizzes: post an MP3 of a car horn and give five choices (with photos of the car) below, see how many people get it right.

I love that idea.
Sound is such an important part of car design. From the road noise to the engine noise to the beeps, blips, and clicks. And now we have voice activated controls and talk-back features like navigation systems.

and the engine tone. an aston martin db9 may not be as nicely built as an equivalent ferrari, or as fast. but that engine sound! makes it better IMHO.

on 28 Nov 06Speaking of sound, did you guys see that DPReview.com started adding MP3s of shutter releases? Check out the D40 Preview, you can here it clicking away. Good stuff.

on 28 Nov 06One more tidbit on sound: just Google Video or YouTube for “MyFavoriteCar + dyno” and you can see a dyno run of some cars. Automobile Magazine covers some fast small guys. While personally I’m considering the NEW Mazda Speed3, I think the new Civic SI sounds great. Have a listen:

on 28 Nov 06Jason, I don’t know if this is the best way to share this with you or not, but I’ve noticed many times before that you are a huge car enthusiast… if you and Carlos would like to see what’s coming up soon on DreamCars.com, feel free to use the contact us form on the web site and I’ll hook you up with “test drive” access asap. FYI, DreamCars.com is all designed, developed and hosted on Mac OS X!

on 28 Nov 06@Tim: Saab is listed.
really killer site. could use a design overhaul, but absolutely killer content.

on 28 Nov 06I was impressed to see the names of even Indian companies and cars. That’s quite a comprhensive database.

on 28 Nov 06On my display the search box has the smallest text I have ever seen. Almost totally unreadable.
Doing a search on ‘corolla’ returns six hits, none of which name ‘Toyota Corolla’.
I guess this site isn’t meant for mundane people like me.
JB
on 29 Nov 06Have you ever ‘heard’ an eletric car parking? That’s it, you don’t hear it… So, I guess a killer application for it would be a ‘parking car noise’ generator, right? Just to let people know that it was there…

on 29 Nov 06Talk about mass linkage; 10 out of 13 links in that post point to the cartype website. Carlos may as well use the post as a sitemap for future visitors!
Fabian
on 29 Nov 06Just thought i’d note that 10 out of 13 links in the post point to the cartype website. No need to do that sitemap Carlos, it’s already done for you right here!

on 29 Nov 06Gee, the “I park like an idiot” would be funny if I didn’t have see this on a daily basis and more than once.. yah.
