Alright, the big day is finally here! REWORK is now available in stores. You can order the US version online from the following booksellers:
International versions are either out already or coming soon. Check with your local retailer. There’s also an audiobook version read by Mike Chamberlain (listen to a sample).
At the book site, you’ll now find a PDF that includes five essays and illustrations from the book:
Download PDF excerpt (1.7 MB)
And here’s the copy from the inside flap of the book, also a good primer on what you’ll find:
Most business books give you the same old advice: Write a business plan, study the competition, seek investors, yadda yadda. If you’re looking for a book like that, put this one back on the shelf.
REWORK shows you a better, faster, easier way to succeed in business. Read it and you’ll know why plans are actually harmful, why you don’t need outside investors, and why you’re better off ignoring the competition.
The truth is you need less than you think. You don’t need to be a workaholic. You don’t need to staff up. You don’t need to waste time on paperwork or meetings. You don’t even need an office. Those are all just excuses.
What you really need to do is stop talking and start working. This book shows you the way. You’ll learn how to be more productive, how to get exposure without breaking the bank, and tons more counterintuitive ideas that will inspire and provoke you.
With its straightforward language and easy-is-better approach, REWORK is the perfect playbook for anyone who’s ever dreamed of doing it on their own. Hardcore entrepreneurs, small-business owners, people stuck in day jobs they hate, victims of “downsizing,” and artists who don’t want to starve anymore will all find valuable guidance in these pages.
Press
Reviews are starting to pour in. Inc Magazine’s review of Rework:
Fried and Hansson are the Henry David Thoreaus of entrepreneurship. They preach doing less and embracing constraints…Written with genuine voice — a sometimes cranky and profane voice at that.
800-CEO-READ did a brief Q&A with Jason in advance of the book. Here’s what the site’s Jon Mueller had to say about the book:
This isn’t just a book about changing your business, it’s about changing how you think about business, and is, perhaps, one of the most important books you’ll read this year. Whether you’re admin or CEO, there are many things to learn, and this book offers some great insight into how we all can waste less time, offer people more value, and accomplish things we’ve not yet imagined.
Tim Ferriss encourages people to think of the book “as an Elements of Style for building profitable businesses in a web-savvy world.” Small Business Trends says, “It distills the typical business subjects to essentials, then offers inspired suggestions with a sharp imaginative eye.” This Chicago Magazine profile plugs the book too.
Not everyone loves REWORK though. One critic called it “not just bad but dangerous.”
Thank yous
It’s been quite a haul to get here (this podcast will tell you all about the process of writing the book) and some thanks are due.
We’re very appreciative of all the great work done by our team at Crown Publishing: Dennelle Catlett, Jacob Bronstein, Jean Traina, Julian Pavia, Meredith McGinnis, Nathan Roberson, Rick Horgan, Tara Gilbride, Tina Constable, and everyone else there who helped out. We realize we’re not the easiest bunch to work with so we appreciate all of your patience and hard work.
Mike Rohde did a terrific job on the illustrations while under a really tight time frame. Getting those sketches in there really transformed the book. And kudos to Coudal Partners and everyone else who did such a snazzy job on the video trailers.
Lisa DiMona at Lark Productions is our agent and did a super job guiding us through the foreign world of book publishing. Seth Godin also gave us some invaluable pointers along the way and provided the blurb that’s on the cover of the book.
And thanks to everyone else who provided blurbs too: Tom Peters, Mark Cuban, Tony Hsieh, William C. Taylor, Kathy Sierra, Scott Rosenberg, Saul Kaplan, Penelope Trunk, John Maeda, and Jessica Livingston. We really appreciate your time and kind words.
And finally, thanks to you guys: the readers of Signal vs. Noise. Your feedback and comments have helped us examine these ideas from every angle. We’re thankful to have such a wise audience.

on 09 Mar 10Gratz all! I’m looking forward to reading it. Hoping my Amazon pre-order arrives today.

on 09 Mar 10Bought mine the second Borders opened this morning and I’ve read up to page 104. Should finish the book later tonight. It’s a really enjoyable book. Easy to read. Full of typical 37 signals wisdom. Thanks guys. Your hard work has paid off again.

on 09 Mar 10I pre-ordered the book on Amazon about 3 months ago, along with a new tool belt (to get free shipping). I really need that damn tool belt, so I’m glad to see this book is on it’s way :D

on 09 Mar 10Just purchased a copy for our office from Amazon. Looking forward to the read.

on 09 Mar 10Not sure what Crown’s relationship is with Barnes & Noble, but really hoping it will be available for the Nook soon. Tried to buy it today, but the only result that shows up for “Rework” is a book by Jesse The Body Ventura.

on 09 Mar 10Is there an electronic version of REWORK for our eBook readers?

on 09 Mar 10Congratulations to Jason and David. I ordered my copy via Amazon Prime yesterday and am expecting it today. I’m looking forward to being inspired as I was when I read Getting Real almost 5 years ago.

on 09 Mar 10Great read, but not much new material for those that follow 37signals regularly, have read Getting Real, etc.
For those that don’t, however, it’s an EXCELLENT intro into running a business correctly. Everyone, regardless of field, will gain something from this book. It will be circulating my office indefinitely.

on 09 Mar 10Any chance of a PDF version for international customers.
I’ve tried shipping books to India, but they are always damaged when they get here.

on 09 Mar 10Congratulations, guys, and thank you for the hard work at every turn. If your Rework readers learn even half as much as I’ve learned working with you, you’ll have accomplished some big stuff and contributed mightily to the cause of entrepreneurship. Here’s to that, and to your continuing to teach and inspire in the way that you do!

on 09 Mar 10Great work guys! I’m looking forward to get my hands on one.

on 09 Mar 10Congrats on the release. This seems like a great book to read on my iPad when they are released. Any idea if/when it will make it to the iBooks store?
(And for those asking, it is available on Kindle. How could a company with Bezos as an investor release a book that wasn’t?)
Fernando Emmanoel Borba
on 09 Mar 10Congratulations folks!
I wish I were there… :-)
Living in Brazil I think that my best option is buy an audiobook version of it. Otherwise, we will have to pay the amount of 5 books to get one book here in a reasonable time.
Alex
on 09 Mar 10I’m really looking forward to the book… got 4 copies to read with my friends… book club!
Congrats to you.
Denny Deaton
on 09 Mar 10Congratulations guys! I can’t imagine all the work that went into this, I hope it pays off for you!
I’m looking forward to receiving my pre-ordered copy from B&N very soon and reading it. I loved Getting Real (read it a few times and keep it handy as well) and look forward to your take on the business side. I’ve been following you guys for years, so I really hope there are some new topics in the book that you have yet to cover publicly.

on 09 Mar 10Mazel Tov!

on 09 Mar 10Yes, it is available on the Kindle, $9.99. But what I want to know is why B&N doesn’t have the Nook version up?!

on 09 Mar 10Congratulations on the new book! Started reading it on my commute this morning. Inspiring stuff. Deserves to be a huge success.

on 09 Mar 10Why is there no PDF version available? Seems like a major step in the wrong direction.

on 09 Mar 10I just finished the audio version of the book, very good read/listen. Rework reads like the younger sibling of Seth Godin’s Linchin.
I understand cursing in a public venue is all the rage these days and has often been a ‘thing’ for 37s, but good grief is the F-bomb really needed in the book? Maybe it is more obvious in the audio version.
Adam
on 09 Mar 10Just bought the book on Amazon. Looking forward to a good read. I would be curious to know the number of copies sold by the end of the week.
Mike Rohde
on 09 Mar 10Congratulations on the release of REWORK to Jason, David and the entire 37signals team! I know a little of how much work this has been for you guys, so enjoy the benefits.
Thanks for choosing me to illustrate the book. It’s been an honor to be part of the process, and exciting to help amplify your essays with my sketches.
Thank you!

on 09 Mar 10No problem. Just curious. I’ve preordered the book and can’t wait to check it out. Keep up the good work. You guys are an inspiration.
Sean Lynch
on 09 Mar 10Book looks great!
Can’t wait for the PDF version. I’ll prize it as much as my PDF version of Getting Real.
(yes I know you said there will not be a PDF version If there was one I would already have purchased a copy and would be reading it now instead of posting this comment)
--Josh
on 09 Mar 10For those of you looking for a PDF version – if you just prefer to be able to read it on the computer (versus printing it out, which the physical book would work for), you could also download the Kindle client for your OS and buy it through that.
Tim
on 09 Mar 10I was wondering why Amazon hit my credit card this morning.
Radness. I just dusted off Linchpin so need this.
And congrats. You guys are truly an inspiration to many. My life changed after reading Getting Real. It’s on my book shelf with “THE BIBLE” written on it, underlined in highlighter and page numbers on the front to reference the most relevant stuff.
Reading that book changed everything for me. I was midway through designing my first iPhone app, and it completely changed how I viewed how the app should be done.
AND as a result I bought Defensive Design for the Web, which COMPLETELY and irrevocably changed my new website’s form design. I mean completely. All I could think about was how I could make it radder and easier to use.
Anyway, rant end. Can’t wait to get the book in Oz.

Nathan Donaldson
on 10 Mar 10It is available on Kindle, as long as you are in a ‘privileged’ area of the world. I, for instance, can’t buy it in the Asia & Pacific area.
Disappointing.
Nathan
Josh McDonald
on 10 Mar 10Seriously disappointed to see the Kindle version not available internationally!
I was looking forward to reading Rework, but I guess I’m left only with the irony of 37s releasing their book about new ways of doing business, the old, evil, protectionist way.
You guys are the last company I expected to be complicit in this sort of thing :’(
Please tell your publisher: Doing this doesn’t mean I pay extra for the paper version in a book store. It means I don’t pay at all.
JF
on 10 Mar 10Josh: I doubt there’s a conspiracy here to keep the Kindle version off your Kindle. I think there’s probably a simple reason. I don’t know the reason but I’ll be happy to see if I can find out for you.
As far as being “complicit in this sort of thing” – we don’t have any control over where the book shows up, who carries it, or how its carried. These are decisions left up to the different publishers. There is no “universal publisher” here – there are different publishers here in different countries/regions/languages.
Tonetheman
on 10 Mar 10Need a nook version or pdf really bad :(
Caspar Chiquet
on 10 Mar 10I would also greatly appreciate an international Kindle version.
Here’s a customer, willing to pay 10 dollars for your product (I would even pay more than that), and you (the publisher) don’t want it. That’s simply stupid.
It is extremely sad to see regionalization of content still affecting a great product like your book in the 21st century.
As you have now some experience with publishing a book, would it be possible to skip the middleman?
Can you give me an email address at Brown Business, I would like to tell them too.
George Anderson
on 10 Mar 10Inside the back cover there’s a credit for “[p]hotograph of Eric Heinemeier Hansson.” Who’s that? Or who’s error is that?
Looking forward to digging in.
JF
on 10 Mar 10George: We found two errors in the final printing. David’s photo credit and “sinspired” instead of “inspired” on the acknowledgments page. Planned to be fixed for the second printing.
Josh McDonald
on 10 Mar 10JF: Thanks for the feedback, I definitely would like to know if it’s just a snafu, or if they just don’t want money from the kind of people who follow 37s.
FWIW, There really is a conspiracy: the Australian print industry has bought laws making it illegal to import books for resale, giving local publishers a monopoly enforced with out tax dollars, which they routinely abuse (not only with exorbitant local book prices).
But whichever publisher decided I can’t buy it on Kindle, the decision on who published the book does come down to you guys. As someone who faces these sorts of geographically based lockouts (or arbitrary price increases) all the time, I simply wouldn’t sign a contract with somebody who was going to sell my product in that way. It’s the reason I canceled my Audible.com membership, which I loved.

Some reality:
We signed the deal with our publisher back in late November of 2008. The international version of the Kindle was released on October 7, 2009 – nearly 10 months after our deal was signed.
There was nothing international to talk about beyond the standard international publication rights. The international version of the Kindle wasn’t even a discussion point because it didn’t exist. You can’t negotiate when there’s nothing to negotiate.
Fast forward to today: I can’t tell you a thing about the iPad version of REWORK, or if it will even exist, or which countries it will even be available in, because I’m not privy to this information. I simply do not have access. I don’t even think final negotiations between Apple and publishers are even done yet. iPad distribution wasn’t a contract point in 2008. Things happen after contracts are signed. Things you have no control over since they are brand new and governed by things above and beyond your own contract.
So there’s often more to these stories than meets the casual eye. It would be nice if there were a series of checkboxes all laid out with all past, present, and all future options for publication, along with every edge case in every country, but that’s just not how it works. New things happen and decisions are made far above you. That’s part of the deal when working with any distributor.
That’s the story. I’ll see what I can find out about the International Kindle version for you.
Andrew Canion
on 10 Mar 10Just throwing my support in for an international (Australian) Kindle version. It’s frustrating to have this great device which can buy books immediately, but not be able to spend my money on a book that I want to read!

on 10 Mar 10That would be great, thank you.
Anyway, the important thing here is that it is the usual experience to find the books I want are only available to the Kindle in the US, but this is the first time that the minute I saw this issue I knew where to turn to and that there was someone who would listen.
Shenouda Bertel
on 10 Mar 10Congratulations, for releasing the new book.
Michael
on 10 Mar 10Well, I bought it at Borders, took it to a coffeeshop, and read it in about 50 minutes. It was really short and little more than Getting Real with pictures. I saw a lot of identical passages, in fact. I realized that this book is meant for a general audience, not those of us who have been reading this blog for years. So, I went back to Borders and returned it.
However, I wondered if it might have been possible for you to write a book I wanted to keep on my shelf. You mentioned in Rework that you cut the size in half. In my opinion, books need a certain completeness of thought and volume of information to deserve to be referenced and re-read. Perhaps the passages you cut really were worse, but I suspect you reduce the whole book’s synergy and power when you whittled it down.
Cameron
on 10 Mar 10Like some of the others have already mentioned, I am really hoping that it becomes available on the nook soon. Does anyone know?
Ryan Wilson
on 10 Mar 10I’ve been reading your blog for about 5 years now, fell in love with Ruby on Rails Development and am a passionate evangilest for adopting Getting Real.
The kind of thought leadership that your business delivers is exactly what “the real world” needs. Sharing your business philosophy is undoubtedly good for the rest of us, but, as your chapter on teaching suggests it carries far more value than any banner ad could buy.
Thanks for writing 2 great books, creating great products and giving back along the way.
PS. I read mine on the Kindle and loved the ability to make highlights and notes along the way.
Stephen Parker
on 10 Mar 10@Michael
Lots of the stuff in Rework is familiar territory for readers of this blog, but I still think there is tons of value in owning the book. It’s a quick read that offers simple ideas for just about everyone, and I imagine the practice of going back to those ideas will be valuable just about every time. To me, that is exactly what a book of reference should be.

on 10 Mar 10Planning to visit the Borders at Park Ave. and 57th street in NYC later today; hope they have a copy in stock.

on 10 Mar 10Picked up a hard copy and started reading on the L ride home yesterday.

on 10 Mar 10This is great! I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a book launch. Thanks for the PDF excerpt, it really wet my appetite for the full book. I am heading over to Amazon to get it now!
Daniel
on 10 Mar 10Amazon shipped my copy one day before the release date (i guess it’s because i pre-ordered it back in january). Should arrive here in Brazil on the 30th.
We’ve been following 37s since Defensive Design for the Web (which is still, imho, a great read) and using Basecamp for more than 3 years (we’ve been featured on a case study in feb/09). Congrats, guys! Rework is gonna be another great book.
Jason: any news on Rework being released in portuguese? Couldn’t find a publisher mentioning the release over here yet. Thanks!
Michael
on 10 Mar 10@Stephen Parker, you may be right. I may want to read it again someday and perhaps I’ll buy it again. I thought about it more and it seems designed to give a jolt in a certain direction than to actually be a part of the destination. Great books draw the reader towards them. Lesser books push the reader away, even if the push is in the right direction…
We’ll see!
Nathan Donaldson
on 10 Mar 10I have read the blog post mentioned above regarding international Kindle editions. But I couldn’t understand it.
Essentially, I can buy 10,000’s of Kindle books here in New Zealand, but I can’t buy yours. I can buy a print version, which I don’t want at 4 – 6 times the price.
Again, I remain disappointed.
Peter Cooper
on 10 Mar 10International rights are scary. Most publishers do a shocking job of dealing with them. I have a book published with Apress and learn almost nothing about how it’s treated overseas, I just see payments turn up from time to time.. So it’s not really 37signals fault that we’re stuck with no editions to buy, but I’m going to be careful in future of signing away my international rights.. I’d much rather sell a PDF or something.
Another downside to dealing with international rights is the right of foreign publishers to tinker with your book. The UK publisher has gone with a horrible cover for Rework in the UK. I hope they haven’t messed around with the contents..
Ollie Judge
on 10 Mar 10For those of you with international Kindles who want Rework but cannot find it on your regional store I have found a workaround. If you change your physical address attached to your Kindle to somewhere in the US you automatically are assigned to the US store and able to buy Rework plus any other US restricted books. I do advise however delivering the book to the iPhone or PC client then once you have switched your account back to your local address delivering the book to your Kindle as the use of international Wispernet to deliver the book will be charged per the size of the item. Remember nothing is delivered to the actual address and that you can use your current billing options. Happy reading! And yes the book is worth the hassle.
Kareem Grant
on 10 Mar 10My pre-order of Rework was delivered yesterday. Can’t wait to read it.
I’m a huge fan of 37signals and the way they approach business.
Congrats and good luck!

on 10 Mar 10The book is great. Great style. Just I found it reads like it’s written on a computer. Like it’s written with google wave or on writeboards. Like you were really high on caffeine. It reads so fast. Just my impression.
Btw. it’s the #1 bestseller on amazon.de in “english books”! I love that.

on 11 Mar 10Hi Guys,
Have been a big fan of your site ( haven’t read this book though).
Thanks for keeping it real and promoting pragmatic approaches, instead of the wise-sounding textbook prattle on how things should work – because from whatever little experience I’ve gained – murphy and dilbert rule the real world a lot more than acronym driven development.
-Arun.

on 11 Mar 10I love the book so far. Your insights are helpful and speak to my “gut”. However, I wish it was more like a story and less like short academic/philosophical passages.
I was very interested to read the back story of how you came to these conclusions. Some dialogue and story telling would have been nice.
Sayam
on 11 Mar 10I see a lot of like-minded folks here. I wish there was a forum for us all: the no-BS, the get-shit-done type of business owners who use common sense and focus on fulfillment for themselves and their teams, instead of chasing after boiler-plate how-to’s and values fed by the business schools.
I know I’d have a great conversation with anyone here. We could meet and discuss ideas related to working and business.
Anybody with suggestions? Just curious.
Robin
on 11 Mar 10Just read the PDF. Does REWORK talk about anything that isn’t in “Getting Real”? Felt like as if the essentials where the same.
ML
on 11 Mar 10REWORK available for Nook here.

on 11 Mar 10I’ve been emailing with Uitgeverij Mouria (the publisher in The Netherlands) with regards to the geographic restrictions on the English language Kindle Edition of REWORK at Amazon.com.
According to Uitgeverij Mouria, their rights are limited to the Dutch translation of REWORK. They also state not to have interest in, or objections against the English language Kindle Edition of REWORK being available for customers in The Netherlands.
Essentially, there’s no reason at all (not even a bad one) to have geographic restrictions on the English language Kindle Edition of REWORK for customers in The Netherlands.
Chet
on 11 Mar 10Anyone know what the cover for REWORK is different on the Kindle vs. the print version?
Caspar Chiquet
on 12 Mar 10@Ollie Judge
That works, thanks a lot! I just bought it from U.S. Amazon. I didn’t know that for the Kindle store, location is not linked to your credit card.
@Thijs
Exactly, I think the problem is not with the translated versions, but restricting the U.S. Kindle version from being sold to Kindles outside of the U.S.
The majority of U.S. Kindle books can be bought from elsewhere in the world.
The update on the 37Signals product page does not really answer that question.

on 12 Mar 10Congrats! Looks awesome. I’m a big fan of your first one.
Funny you should mention picking a fight with the competitors in the book. We’ve been playing David and Goliath since the beginning with many of our products.
Just yesterday we picked a fight on our blog with the two largest competitors. When you have a better product, it’s easy.
We simply showed the differences in the products and displayed detailed screenshots side by side.
It definitely gets you noticed and I agree that many will rally behind you…
Here’s how you do it without being dishonest and defamatory.
