Brian Crabtree of Monome sent us a link to the above clip and writes:
Thought you might like this design detail. We originally had a sortof “logo” pattern flash on startup, which is abstract in reality, pretty disassociative. Now you get the satisfying sense of physically “giving” power to the device.
Really cool feature. It reminds me of the “off” switch on the iphone, it gives a really nice little click when you hit it. When my phone is silenced (by a really sweet physical switch I might add), the “off” sound doesn’t happen, and I’m disappointed (but instantly remember I’m on vibrate).
we need a term for this, something like “faux-analog”
“kelli’s two-color design is inspired by mycelium networks”
Really gorgeous design work.

On a related topic: When my Nokia mobile powers up, it shows a few seconds of animation. I would gladly go without it, so I wonder if the phone actually needs the time anyway to initialize, or if the animation is just gratious like the awful website intro pages.

Second – the Monome is a sick controller used by artists such as Kode 9 and Daedelus – any music makers should definitely check it out…

The new packaging for the Monomes is absolutely lovely, too:
