Jamis loves digging through numbers and stats and generating interesting reports. One of the most fun is when he writes a script to summarize the Campfire activity in our main “All Talk” room.
Here’s a summary of stuff people have said and done in the room over the past 30 days:

Nathan
on 11 Mar 08What does “The Earth” refer to?
JF
on 11 Mar 08Nathan, that was a little inside joke with Sam.
Sam uses his bike for transportation. We spotted Bikes on Stuff White People Like.
In the article it says:
So we logged into CF as “The Earth” and said “Sam: Hey, thanks.”
Mike Rundle
on 11 Mar 08So basically Jason spends his days away from the computer, and when he gets back, he posts URLs to sites he likes and images. Yup, I believe it!
Brandon
on 11 Mar 08My, isn’t Jason a chatty kathy. :)
Seban
on 11 Mar 08Jamis must be bored sometimes when he produces this stats.
Jamis
on 11 Mar 08@Seban, on the contrary, this is merely evidence of Rails making me 10x as productive!
Darius K.
on 11 Mar 08It would be nice to see those stats as a percentage of total words uttered in chat. It’s one thing if Jason says “brb” 36 times and he’s only said 100 words. It’s another if he’s just by far the most talkative member and just ends up saying “brb” more often because of that.
brad
on 11 Mar 08I had one client who used to praise me by writing “you’re the best!” in her emails. After a few years, I did a Google Desktop search for the phrase “you’re the best” and came up with 431 entries, most of them from her but a few dozen from other clients and colleagues as well. Kind of funny, and a good thing to do when you’re having a hard week and need a little ego-boost. Although when someone says something like that so habitually, it loses its meaning.
Sam
on 11 Mar 08Who the hell is “Sarah Hatter”?
Carlos
on 11 Mar 08Interesting to see that the ones that blog the most are the ones that commit the less…
Jess
on 11 Mar 08Agree with Darius K. It would be interesting to see who is “most positive” and “most negative” by seeing the percentage of positive words uttered using #positive/total. I bet something like this would be interesting for twitter as well… lots of public text data out there on twitter to analyze! And think, you could assign arbitrary adjectives (positive, vulgar, condescending, angry, happy) to each public account on twitter. Fun times.
SH
on 11 Mar 08@Sam: I am. I’ve done customer support for 37s for a year now.
leppaZ
on 11 Mar 08uhm,
this post seems like a set of slides of an university class showing the PI up to the million decimal digit :-)
Tom
on 11 Mar 08Wow guys, thanks for all the effort you put into visualizing this data for us. What a gripping, unending column of preformatted numbers that was. Signal vs. Noise indeed.
justin
on 11 Mar 08Haha @ the emo Jamis. That is an impressive frowny-face margin.
Ryan Christensen
on 12 Mar 08I’m sort of curious about what The Earth had to say in it’s 3 messages over the span of 22 total seconds in the room….
Jamis
on 12 Mar 08@Ryan, see Jason’s comment, above
Tim
on 12 Mar 08Looks like DHH is near the bottom of the list on nearly every stat, including code check-ins.
What does he do all day?
condor
on 12 Mar 08This is great, I found myself laughing at some of these stats.
Can’t believe no ones mentioned all the four letter words Jason’s been spouting off :)
carlivar
on 12 Mar 08This makes me wonder again why DHH always insists on his full middle name being shown. Or is it one of those dual last name things? It messes up the column width!
Tim
on 12 Mar 08I think Hansson is DHH maiden name. Rumor has it, DHH is some how related to the Hanson Brothers
Matt Lee
on 12 Mar 08Who is Josh Peek? And how come Sarah isn’t listed in that box up there ——-^ that says who y’all are?
JF
on 12 Mar 08Matt: Sarah will be added to the sidebar shortly. Josh is helping us with some coding part time.
Greg
on 12 Mar 08Isn’t Josh only 19 years old.
Seems odd to me that a company would but that must trust in someone so inexperienced.
George
on 12 Mar 08Ryan doesn’t wink… or blink… something he learned as an apprentice of Chuck Norris.
Rob Cameron
on 12 Mar 08Yeah, DHH only has like 20 commits to the codebase! He’s probably jet setting around the globe…being the worlds hottest hacker is a tough job, you know.
Don Schenck
on 12 Mar 08Quick:
Jason … “Just”!! Wha the
“You’re the best!” OMG I say that ALL the time (hear it a lot, too … but that’s for another forum .wink.)
“Who Is Sarah Hatter?” ... hmmmm … great t-shirt.
“Paging Jim Coudal…”
D
on 12 Mar 08Greg: re: Josh – Since when does age equate to or connote ability?
DHH
on 12 Mar 08Rob, it’s actually all that time I have to spend keeping my swirl in order that’s stealing away from programming. I am cursed with that beautiful european hair!
JF
on 12 Mar 08Isn’t Josh only 19 years old. Seems odd to me that a company would but that must trust in someone so inexperienced.
We trust people to drive at 16. We trust people to vote at 18. I think we can trust them to code at 19. 17, no fucking way, but 19, sure.
SH
on 12 Mar 08For the record, Sarah Hatter is not 19 years old. (sigh)
Client9
on 13 Mar 08^^That wouldn’t be a mad Hatter, would it?
