Lots of the little stuff that used to wind up here at SvN gets posted by us individually at Twitter these days. So as an experiment, let’s try a wrap-up post featuring highlights from this week’s 37signals staff posts at Twitter.

@dhh Kindle still owns the iPad for use outside. You can’t see anything but smudges and it overheats in 5-10 minutes in direct sunlight :(
@jasonfried You haven’t blown them away until they send you a check.
@jsierles Travel, but have a modest base. Carry a pen. Put the camera away. Talk to people.
@asianmack For all the praise Apple gets for its quality user interfaces, iTunes really sucks the big one.
@bergatron You can double-tap a paragraph of text with TWO fingers on the iPad to select it. The alternative is four successive single taps.
@mattlinderman Good piece on “Producing Pro Podcasts.” http://emusician.com/tutorials/emusic_producing_pro_podcasts/index.html

@asianmack Apple’s market capitalization exceeds Walmart’s. Microsoft and Exxon are the only US companies whose market caps exceed Apple’s.

on 09 Apr 10I like this feature and hope that it becomes a staple. Great observations, links, and musings.

on 09 Apr 10You guys are going to get a whole lot more followers now I bet. I am going to start following a couple of you I wasn’t following before. I like this one:
@jsierles Travel, but have a modest base. Carry a pen. Put the camera away. Talk to people.

on 09 Apr 10Completely agree about the iTunes comment! Amazingly terrible, in my opinion, and Apple products always force you into it.
Takes a lot away from the Apple experience, imho.
Leo
on 09 Apr 10I know I read The Fisherman’s Parable a while ago and I liked it. Some weeks ago I started looking for it again because I wanted to show it to somebody else but couldn’t find it. Thanks for posting it. I really like the moral of the story: you can’t sacrifice family and people than money, because it won’t make life more enjoyable.

on 09 Apr 10iTunes is amazingly bad. It’s clunky and there is no reason for it to exist anymore. It should all be web based and iPhones/iPods should sync with Apple’s servers.
Imagine how AWESOME that would be.
Chris (from L.C.)
on 09 Apr 10@Leo Tim Ferriss cited that parable in his book, The Four Hour Work Week. Check it out if you haven’t yet. It’s definitely a view-changer.
John
on 10 Apr 10Apple’s market capitalization is good… for now. Their proprietary lock-out strategy will fail in the long-run. iTunes is a perfect example of this.

on 11 Apr 10I love this please make it a regular on this blog. thanks

on 11 Apr 10couldn’t agree more with the iTunes remark… but what are the good mac os alternatives?
Grover Saunders
on 12 Apr 10Or to take Dave’s comments further, what good alternative is there period? I don’t think iTunes is perfect, but it tackles the job as well or better than anything else I’ve used. I think most of its problems revolve around the nature of the job it’s tasked with (managing what for most of us is thousands and thousands of records with multiple dependancies), not because of any inherent weakness in iTunes’ design. Is there a product on any platform that “does it right?”
It’s just interesting because I constantly hear both how terrible iTunes is and how iTunes is the key to iPod/iPhone/iPad’s success.
By overheats, you surely mean “gets a bit warm” right? Because I can’t imagine this is true for a device that remains cool to the touch in all other conditions.
DHH
on 12 Apr 10Grover, no, I mean overheats as in the device is no longer functional. The iPad has a built-in heat sensor that shuts down the machine when it gets too hot. That happens in 5-10 minutes in direct sunlight at 80 degrees.
JD
on 13 Apr 10Grover, Remember iTunes was based on SoundJam for the Mac. It was basically a MP3 player.
Then they introduced the store, internet radio, podcasts, TV shows, ringtones, apps, genius, iTunes DJ, smart playlists, iPhone/iPod syncing, Address book syncing, Calendar syncing, etc. Sure it works alright. There aren’t great alternatives because if you want to use the iPhone you have to use iTunes.
Ask yourself this: Why is it still called iTunes?
