Market infographic
Edward Tufte says this is “an excellent news graphic.”
Click for full size version.
Here is an excellent news graphic that provides enormous historical context, describes rich variation not just a recent average, combines words and graphics, uses annotation to call out important points, and contextualizes recent changes in market volatility. It integrates traditional news reporting with high-resolution (sparkline-like) graphics, and makes no distinction among words, numbers, graphics—the idea is whatever it takes to explain something.

on 25 Feb 08Whoa! I blacked out staring at that bookcase. Very cool but I’d hate to reach vertigo on the top step.

on 25 Feb 08I was about to say the same thing about the staircase…that’s nightmare material. It reminds me of the time I climbed ladders to the belfry of a 14th century English church and then looked down despite being warned not to (maybe I was Orpheus in a previous life).
As for the treadmill workstation, I remember seeing a TV news story on the guy who developed that. I think it’s a great idea; it would take some getting used to but I could deal with 16-hour work days a lot easier if I didn’t spend nearly all of that time sitting.

on 25 Feb 08I hope the walkstation keyboard is waterproof, there will be some people puking on it after they get motion sickness trying to read a spreadsheet while their heads are bobbing ;)

on 25 Feb 08Does the treadmill power the PC? :)

on 25 Feb 08I have the prepara ‘herb savor’ device and it works exactly as advertised. I used to hate buying a big bunch of fresh herbs only to use a handful on that night’s dinner. Will keep them fresh for weeks at a time for sure.

on 25 Feb 08Living in London I’ve seen some of the most unique and innovative uses of space anywhere. Here, New York and Tokyo are probably the only cities in the world where the high cost of real estate demand these kinds of solutions. (London has the added benefit of lots and lots of “listed” buildings which are hard to modify.)
Personally, I love the Walkstation. It would be great to have an office with one of those.

on 25 Feb 08I absolutely love that staircase. On the way to bed, I’d be able to say, “hmmm, what to read tonight?”

on 25 Feb 08I love the Clamp-On Surge Protector, I just wish that it came in a different colors and a possible attached battery for UPS protection. I really hate how no one seems to make an UPS that isn’t big and ugly. I really think APC and/or Tripp Lite would have a sure fire winner if the could make a UPS that didn’t look like a UPS that was more clear and modern looking (sort of like what HomeHero did with the fire estinguisher).

on 25 Feb 08The concept of the bookshelf staircase is pretty sweet, but I think there might be some issues with the execution. As brought up in the Gizmodo comments, you’d end up kicking your books, and the thing just looks really hard to climb…

on 26 Feb 08I love the Ice hotel. Imagine having the opportunity to redo your entire home every year. It is also obvious that Ice is a material that brings out the true creativity in designers and architects. So dear architects next time you have a big job don’t think bricks, steel and glass – think Ice.

on 26 Feb 08Great findings! Especially the photos of the Icehotel impressed me much wannagothere.
The AirMail laptop sleeve reminds me of my free MacBook Air that was sent to me in a quite similar fashion ;)

on 27 Feb 08Only one complaint about the Times graphic. Would’ve liked more differentiation in color among the yearly index performance indicators. The varying shades of yellow and blue aren’t easily identifiable when scanning the graphic, yet represent significantly different figures (0, 10, or 25 percent).
